New York USBA 15 Recaptures NACBA Championship Title

This year, 7 teams took to the courts in the Youth 15 & Under division. Pool Play ended and it was NY USAB 15 who earned the bye, while the other 6 teams would need to play for the remaining 3 spots in the Semis. In the Quarters, NY USAB Biddy upset the NY Titans 22-18, as Justin Wong had 6 pts and Bodie Clauss had 4 for USAB, while Jia Chong Chen scored 6 for the Titans. The NY Rockits Youth upended the Philly Young Suns 37-27. Jon Lai had 13 for Philly, while Andrew Lee led a balanced Rockits attack with 10. Toronto CCYAA Youth won 55-26 over the Boston Knights Youth, with Toronto’s Chris Leung tallying 13.

In the first Semifinal, it would be USAB v/s USAB. The USAB 15's started out slowly, as the USAB Biddy’s got out of the blocks with an 8-2 lead. The keys to this almost upset were Justin Wong and Kevin Yieh, who disrupted the game with his length. The USAB 15’s came back for a 33-22 W, thanks to Deyoung Don's rebounding energy, the relentless defensive pressure from Cody But, and the scoring of Anthony Chang (13 pts). The other semifinal between the NY Rockits Youth and the Toronto CCYAA youth was a much anticipated matchup for those who follow the Boys circuit. But it turned into a blowout from the opening tap as the Rockits couldn’t hit a shot. They trailed Toronto CCYAA 25-2 at the half, before falling 38-22. Fabian Wat and Chris Leung each dropped in 10.

The Championship game between NY USAB and Toronto CCYAA was the same matchup that we always get in odd numbered years, as these two storied programs met in both 2007 and 2009. In this game, CCYAA tried to use the same 1-3-1 press that had been destroying teams all weekend long. But USAB PG Andrew Ng was able to calmly and coolly break the press by hitting his teammates in the 2-1-2 pressbreaker. The flashy Ng penetrated and doled out assists with his precision passing. But the real gamechanger was the play of instant offense MVP Kevin Chen (12 pts, 3 treys). Chen connected on back to back 3’s and then made the top Youth play of the year, with a vicious block/pin on a Toronto player.  The play would have made Lebron proud, and although he was whistled for a foul, it gave USAB the momentum to flip on the turbo switch. Ng continued to direct traffic and PJ Cheung nailed the coffin shut with three straight trifectas in the 2nd half. USAB won 50-30, for their 3rd NACBA Youth title.
