Dear Sponsor:

The Philadelphia Suns was founded in the early 1970’s as a Chinatown community basketball program in the heart of Chinatown.  Since that time, generations of Chinese American youth have participated in the Suns program. Today, the Suns collaborate with Chinatown’s churches and other community organizations to provide hundreds of hours of supervised recreation and countless amounts of community service activities for children, teens, boys, girls, and young adults.

The Philadelphia Suns, Inc. is a fully registered 501(c)(3) tax exempt charity, providing a multi-faceted program of education and recreation for Asian teens and youth. The Philadelphia Suns sponsor a Chinese Cultural Lion Dance program, community clean-ups, tutoring, college scholarships, community service events, soccer, volleyball and other programs in addition to basketball.  Asian teens are rarely served by City, high school, or other recreational programs.  Without the Suns, these young people would have no organized recreational opportunities.

Each year the Philadelphia Suns participate in the North American Chinese Basketball Association Invitational Tournament (NACBAIT).  Teams from across the United States and Canada compete in this event annually, held each Memorial Day weekend as the Tournament travels to a different city each year.   Teams come from San Francisco, Houston, Washington, Boston, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Montreal and many other cities.  There are divisions for men, women, boys, girls, and seniors. This event promotes Chinese cultural exchange and provides a forum for Chinese Americans from across North America to meet and form friendships, while giving these players an opportunity to compete against the best Chinese teams on the continent.  This tournament annually draws upwards of 2,000 players, friends, families, and spectators.

Philadelphia has been named the host city for the NACBAIT in May, 2008 and the Philadelphia Suns will be the designated host organization.  This year’s tournament will involve the entire Chinatown and Chinese community, as we will be hosting these visitors during their stay in the City of Brotherly Love.

Although the final budget has not been completed, our preliminary budget indicates that this event will cost approximately $80,000, of which a significant amount must be raised from community sponsors.  We therefore are asking for your help as we endeavor to produce a great weekend full of events and full of memories.

Thank you for your consideration of this letter and our request for sponsorship.  If you have any questions or would like further information regarding this event, please feel free to Harry Leong at hl_cccc@yahoo.com or by telephone at 215-627-9211.

Sincerely,

Mr. Harry Leong
President, Philadelphia Suns
