WOMEN'S OPEN

The Women’s Open Division is highlighted by the return of the 2008 Champion SF ArcAngels.  Frisco’s game is based on the well rounded play of reigning MVP forward Kelly Tiao (NACBA Top 10).  Her skillset is uncommon and is hard to gameplan for.  Lil’sister Tracy Tiao is also quite a player, as she isn’t afraid to take big shots or to bang underneath as needed.  Guards Jen Sze, Kathleen Ty, Melanie Wong and Rachel Jung are one of the best groups in the NACBA doing what it takes to win.  What this team lacks in height, they make up for with tenacity and speed.  The Toronto CCYAA Women made it to the Finals last year, as guards Cecilia Chan (NACBA Top 10) and Christine Vuong were simply outstanding.  The Cheng twins- Elspeth and Fiona- are well rounded players with college experience, and were able to thrive in their rook shows.  CCYAA won the Pre-NACBAIT Classic this year and looked great as they did so without Chan.  If they continue to improve their chemistry, Toronto may take it all.  The Toronto Dragons have PG Angie Leung (St. John’s, NACBA Top 10) running the team with superb style and they have Niveal Pastrana to slash to the basket for points.  Ann Ching (James Madison, Top 10) is one of the top players in the NACBA, and if she returns this year, then the Dragons will compete for the Championship.  LA Aiya (4 time champions) features 3 of the NACBA’s Top 10 Players of all time (Sabrina Yap, Allison Welsh and Debbie Young), and top tier PG’s in Sidney Giang and Alice Wang.  Their offensive play relies on crisp passing, solid screening and great spacing.  On defense, LA’s halfcourt defense is the best in the division.  They contend every year, and we expect them to push it to the limit once again.

The Washington CYC China Dolls keep getting better and better every time they lace em up.  Highschooler Pui Sham has really started to come into her own this year, as she has been playing some high caliber AAU ball on the weekends.  Her outside shot is the truth, and her handle is always improving.  Kalyn Lee does work inside, and PG El Birman’s court vision and unselfish nature has allowed the China Dolls to legitimately think that they can win something this year.  The addition of 5-11 Shannon Briggs (17 yo) will turn some heads.  The Philly Lady Suns will have the best player in the tournament, as PG Megan Griffith (Columbia) has returned from a pro season in Europe with a League title and numerous accolades.  Center Taylor Lee is solid in the post, Sandy Yu (PSU Abington) is a defensive stopper, and if Ling Lai (NACBA Top 10) can make the tourney then the Suns have the firepower to pull an upset.  The NY Sabres Blue went through a tough year last year in Philly, but they are upbeat about their 2009 chances.  Everyone knows that Tiffany Lee and Maisie Wong (Baruch) can play ball, but if Sabrina Cheng and Vanessa Leung (Pre NACBAIT All-Tourney) provide more options, and if DJ Liu finds the open man, then the Sabres will be all smiles.  Their defense is always intimidating, so if the Sabres’ offense comes through, then they could advance to the playoffs.  The Toronto Black Koi took home the Liberty trophy last year as MVP Kim Lee showed us that she could be the most devastating offensive weapon in the NACBA. Gilliam Maxwell is the big addition here for the Black Koi, as her 5-11 frame will be a matchup problem for whoever they face.  Viola Cheung and Ann Pastrana combine to form more than enough support, so the Black Koi may be legitimately thinking titletime.

The NY Lady Rockits (formerly Lady Cruisers) have a new name tattooed across their chests, but the foundation's still there for a solid performance.  These Rockettes can play some decent hoops.  Diane Wong, Joanna Lau, and Tracy Ng are one of the best/biggest frontcourts around, so if new add Rebecca Chin solidifies the backcourt then they'll be in business.  The NY Sabres Red will be young once again, and Samantha Kong is going to be their floor general.  All-Tourney selection Ashley Lee could build on her 2008 performance and shine in the Liberty prime time.  The Toronto CCYAA Girls are also gunning for the Liberty title, with gangly stringbean Tori Lee coming back as their top performer.  Tori finishes at the basket, and can get up in the air for rebounds.  Her ability to slash will be a big key for CCYAA.  The NY USAB Girls will be making a return after a 2 year absence.  Some of the girls played last year with the Philly Suns, most notably All-Tourney pick Cadie Chu (Queens College).  If some Kristina Ng or Kim Hom can take some of the pressure off Cadie, then USAB could score an upset.
