T.O CCYAA Seniors Makes Headlines Capturing NACBA Title The 2010 NACBAIT Seniors Division would once again be dominated by Toronto CCYAA, as they were aiming for their 6th Championship in 7 years. This amazing run has of course directly coincided with the time that NACBA Top 30 inductee Richard Zhu stepped foot into the circuit. This man has simply dominated the 35 & Over division like no one before him and possibly like no one else ever will again. To add even more zing to their favored team status, this year CCYAA would be sleeping in their own bed and wouldn’t have to deal with travel and logistical issues so it would really be a chore to try and unseat the king this year. Saturday pretty much played out as most expected, with the Toronto CCYAA Sr. and Chicago Dragons Sr. teams going undefeated in their respective pools to earn the top seeds. On Sunday morning, play began at 10:45 am, with Markham FCCM 35 set to meet their Canadian rivals, Montreal MMAC. We anticipated the matchup between Montreal’s Penny Chen and Markham’s Kevin Lee to determine the outcome. Penny dropped 11, but Kevin tallied 16 with most of his deuce dropping coming early on. With Markham out in front by double digits most of the way, Montreal had to foul at the end to get back in the game. Montreal ended the game with one player fouling out, and 4 others with 4 personals. FCCM nailed 9 of 11 down the stretch to preserve a 41-29 win. The second QF game would pit the Boston Knights Sr. and the Winnipeg Storm 35’s. The game was very low scoring in the first half, with neither team finding the range and zebras letting a lot go. The Knights led 11-7 midway through. In the second half, both teams got into a better flow as Kiet Ong (12 pts) nailed 3 treyballs for Winnipeg, and 2009 All-NACBA PF Kin Yun (8 pts, 0-2 ft) hit two triples of his own. Rich Szeto then stepped it up a little as time wound down for Boston, sinking 5 points as the Knights advanced 29-24. In the first Semifinal, Toronto CCYAA Sr. started off quick and never looked back as they obliterated their crosstown buddies, the Markham FCCM 35’s. Victor Chew (9 pts) tossed in a couple longballs but he was no match for the stacked CCYAA lineup. Richard Zhu (11 pts) and Jonathan Chang (9 pts) started the scoring while Stan Ong (11 pts) and Jeff Fong (9 pts) finished the job. CCYAA 54, FCCM 24. The second Semifinal would shape up to the Boston Knights Sr. v/s the Chicago Dragons Sr. team. Henry Yue of Chicago was all over the place, filling up the stat sheet early while teammate James Chow was busy scoring. PF Jason Ng (8 points, 6 rebounds) kept the Knights in it with some moves down in the paint. But once the second half rolled in, no one from Boston could find their shooting touch. Chicago outscored the Knights 16-7 after the break and advanced with a 31-20 win, Nice job Toronto and good luck next year as you go for your lucky 7th. << previous masters 45 & over division recap >> |
