Toronto Shameless No More - Big Upset Win Over NY Flightz
Written by: Mike Mon

This year, 13 teams took part in the Friendship, equaling the record number of teams in Boston’s 2006 tourney.  But 13 turned out not to be such an unlucky number this year, as lady luck would cast her spell on numerous teams throughout the weekend.  In this division, you never know what you’re going to get: such as when a top college level talent like PG Moses Ma goes toe to toe with NACBA Lightyear Studio videographer Nathan Dang in an unstoppable scoring duel, or when a group of weekend warrior veterans like the Chicago Rockers matches up with the youthful and energetic NY Falcons. You just never know what’s going to happen at any moment.

Saturday was highlighted by numerous pool play matchups that turned some heads.  Jimmie Poeng (12 pts, All-NACBA) almost led Philly Fastball B to a big W over the heavily favored NY ISS Flightz in what would have been the upset of the tournament, but Jason Wu sank a baseline jumper to keep ISS in contention.  Jimmy Zheng had an impressive second half with a dozen points as his NY Crossbearers B defeated the NY Falcons 36-34.  Henry Wong (17.6 ppg for the weekend) was unguardable all day long as his Shameless team went undefeated.

On Sunday, the top 8 teams moved to the Medal Round, while the remaining 5 teams competed in the Consolation division.  The Chicago Rockers captured the Consolation with a 41-23 win over the NY Falcons as Kevin Weng (13 pts, 3 treys) and Nick McBride (9 pts, 2 triples) paced their team.

In the Medal QF’s: Alfred Law’s 14 pts sparked the Toronto Blazers to a 29-27 come from behind win over the NY Crossbearers B despite 10 from NYCB’s Tom Sze.  The NY ISS Flightz woke up from a lethargic first half and overcame some poor free throw shooting (7-17) to defeat the always upset minded Toronto FCCBA 21-14.  FCCBA’s Collin Tam led the way with 7.  Dalton Mak (14 pts) had an early 3-point barrage to get Toronto Shameless some breathing room as they pulled out a 36-28 win over Montreal MMAC Mars. PF Andy Chen was his usually reliable self for MTL with 10 pts and 2 triples.  The Montreal Kaitas defeated the Toronto CCYAA Downtown Raiders 52-34.

In the Semifinals, the first game would be the undefeated NY ISS Flightz vs the equally undefeated Toronto Blazers.  The Blazers had no answer for the length of the Flightz as ISS was getting to all the loose balls and they were able to disrupt the Blazers offensive flow.  ISS took a double digit lead and was able to keep All-NACBA pick Alfred Law (14.5 ppg) under wraps for the most part, limiting him to 7 points (all in the first half).  In the second half, the Blazers got a lot more physical with the younger New Yorkers but Coach Yeung’s kids kept their cool and they were headed to the Chip with a 42-23 victory.  The other Final Four game was the Montreal Kaitas OG taking on Toronto Shameless. Once again, Dalton Mak (26 pts, 3 triples, 5 rebs) lit it up for Shameless and he got good help from both Henry Wong as well as Elton Mak (8 pts, 1 trfecta).  Shameless was the better team 48-43.

The Championship Game featured the Tourney favorite NY ISS Flightz and the hot shooting Toronto Shameless team.  Shameless had been playing very well all weekend, but it was the Flightz who had the nicer jerseys, the clear advantage in height, the more talented roster, and the more impressive bunch of groupies.  As expected, the game began with ISS looking to their featured All-Tournament players- wingman Jason Wu (17 pts, 4-4 ft, 3 assists) and 6-4 C George Tang (NACBA Top 18’s, 10 pts, 0-3 ft) for direction.  And once William Hu (13 pts, 1 steal, 4 TO) turned it up a notch, it appeared that the Flightz were finally going to capture a NACBAIT title. MVP Dalton Mak (14 pts, 4 triples, 2 assists) and Henry Wong (16 pts, All-NACBA) sank 5 first half treyballs for Shameless to keep their team in striking distance, but they trailed 24-21 at intermission.  In the second half, New York made a concerted effort to stop Mister Mak and went to a box and one.  Dalton only hit one trifecta in the second half, but the rest of the Shameless players stepped up to the spotlight- with Henry Wong, Henry Cheng, and Kenneth Mak each sinking deep shots thanks to the open floorspace.  Shameless outscored NY 27-21 in the second half for an outstanding 48-45 win.  Awesome job to Toronto Shameless!
