Semifinal action, and on the Main Court it was the #1 SF ArcAngels meeting up with the Toronto Dragons. Both teams are no stranger to the Final Four, so the crowd expected a tight game. Toronto’s Amanda Lum (11 pts, 1-2 FT) was money in the bank, but there was no one who could stop the athletic and long Lulue Burton (24 pts, 15 boards) from penetrating to the basket or crashing the offensive boards. SF was up 25-18 right before the half and was starting to pull away, but forward Danby Wong of the Dragons nailed a clutch buzzer beater to get her team back in the right frame of mind. In the second half, San Francisco kept running and Toronto just didn’t have enough juice to maintain the frantic pace. PG Jen Sze came up big after the half for the ArcAngels, scoring 9 of her 12 points, and San Fran would be back in the Chip with a 50-39 win. Meanwhile, on a neighboring court, the LA Aiya met up with Toronto CCYAA in a physical game, full of hard picks, tumbling ladies, and tough plays. It was a tight game that saw neither team grab a lead of more than 6 points. In the second half, CCYAA looked like they were going to be able to stretch the lead, but Alice Wang of the Aiya came to the rescue as she put up a big three and a couple of drives to keep her team in contention. LA had a shot to tie it at the end, trailing by a triple but the Hail Mary attempt missed, and Toronto would face the ArcAngels in the Finals yet again. Kristen Welsh (10 pts, 2-4 ft) paced LA, while Fiona Cheng (11 pts, 3 assists) and Christine Vuong (8 pts, 4-5 ft, 4 rebs) led CCYAA. Toronto 36, LA 33. In the Championship, Toronto CCYAA met the San Francisco ArcAngels in a repeat performance of last year’s Finals. 2008’s title game turned out to be a real nail biter, as the ArcAngels’ Kelly Tiao was amazing in an MVP performance to give the westcoasters a 47-41 decision. San Francisco knew how dangerous Toronto can be, so they came out determined not to give CCYAA any hope at all. Both teams came in with undefeated records and had pretty much coasted through pool play, so they were seeking to keep it that way. With a full court attack and plenty of unselfish play in transition, SF was able to snare a quick advantage. They were up by 10 within 4 minutes. Meanwhile, Toronto didn’t seem to be at the apex of their game, probably as a result of waging battle with LA the day before. Toronto was able to cut the lead to 10 a couple times, but really had nothing left in the gas tank when it came down to it. They just looked uncharacteristically out of sync and a step too slow to all the bouncing balls. The ArcAngels defeated CCYAA by 17, 60-43. Top 10 PG Cecilia Chan (13 pts, 5 reb, 1 swat) and Fiona Cheng (11 pts, 3 rebs, 1 swipe) led Toronto. The ArcAngels were led in the frontcourt by Kelly Tiao (15 pts, 6-10 FG, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Lulue Burton (16 pts, 7-11 FG, 1 block), while Kathleen Ty (3 assists, 1 steal) paced the backcourt. For Frisco, Tracy Tiao’s all around performance (9 pts, 7 reb, 6 assists, 2 treys, 1 block, 2 steals) earned her MVP honors, as she had a fantasy all-star game. Awesome tourney ArcAngels, and best of luck next year as you attempt the threepeat.
