Hot Off The Press - 28th Annual NACBA Tournament Preview & 28 Players to WatchThe highly anticipated annual NACBA Tournament Preview & Players to Watch is here. Read what is to come this year and the top 28 players to watch at this year's tournament in Philly. The preview is out, so let the games begin! |
The Official NACBAIT Preview The New York Rockits AIA reached the playoffs with a 6 seed last year and were promptly upended by USAB, so they will come back ready. They are in a transitional stage this year, as most of their players have just hit the working world, so they are adjusting to find that balance between work and ball and life. What you can expect from the Rockits is a tough defensive team with great help side and awesome ball pressure from guards Ming Wang and Kenny Yu (Rutgers-Camden). Chris Chin (Baruch) and Kevin Chin (Cooper Union) will do the scoring, while Kevin Low (NYU) and Ricky Vien will do their work on the boards. The Texas Ballistics will be without the sensational 6-4 forward James Mao, who suffered a broken foot while playing in Taiwan earlier this year. They will have to again rely on All-NACBAIT center Norman Wang, 6-3 Kiet Huynh, and mega strong swingman Ronald Lim to pull off a successful run this season. This team has reached the playoffs every year since 2002, so they’re a good bet to at least make it that far. And once you get there, we all know anything can happen. The Philadelphia Suns A turned some heads with their performance at this year’s Pre-NACBAIT Classic, as they came in second place, defeating Washington CYC pretty convincingly two times and giving the NY RL Cruisers a solid run for the money. Guard Richmond Huynh and 6-4 C Jackson Fu are their stars. Meanwhile, Andrew Young has stepped up from last year’s 18/U squad to fill their swingman position with athleticism, joining the incumbent Bin Chun Woo on the wing. Their matchup zone is fantastic and will cause teams problems. The Boston Knights A will again be led by do it all cager Joe Brush, but it is unlikely that 6-10 Michael Dong (Brandeis) will be making the trip, as he has to take care of some issues back in China. Without big Mike, it will be tough going for the Knights but this storied organization will definitely put up a tough fight. 2004 NACBAIT champs, the Boston Hurricanes AAU, will be hungry like the wolf this year, as they have something to prove after a winless Arizona. PG Mike Yih, 3-point bandit Kevin Woo, and 5-11 swingman Johnson Lam will be the leading scorers for Boston, while 6-3 jumping bean C Ricky Chan will do all the garbage work for this team. The slamtastic Jimmy Cheng also returns, so expect a few dazzling dunks from him in transition. After making 2 Final Fours in the past 4 years, you can’t question the Canes’ ability to perform on the big stage, so all indications would be that they will make a strong showing in Philly. The San Francisco Wildcats move up to the Elite after winning the Friendship Division last year in rollover fashion. This team is a trendy pick to make Monday. They will display their high octane offense and pressure defense to a brand new set of teams. Huy Nguyen (2007 MVP), Mike Tsai, LeShang Lin, and Blake Roy can match up with any team’s backcourt in terms of skill, depth, or speed. They have also added 6-5 Cal-Berkley product Thomas Fang, 6-2 center Hank Huang, and 6-4 jamming sensation Darren Jiang. If 7 foot 3 Max Zhang of Cal-Berkley (check the internet for his Soulja Boy dance) finds a way to Philly, you can book at date with the Wildcats at the Chip. One other team to watch is New York Maximum Output, although they return only a handful of players from last year’s squad. This team has never won a playoff game at the Nationals, despite having one of the most talented lineups in existence so their brass hopes this shakeup pays dividends. They do return their Batman and Robin duo of G Wilson Lew and F Alex Stewart (CCNY), but it’s the recent additions that should provide the big boost for MaxOut. Those additions include high scoring guard Nate Brown (St. Peters), who has been playing pro hoops in Europe, and two Hawaiian free agents: 6-5 big man Gavin Cook and 6-3 human highlight reel Stacey Wong. Last but certainly not least, probably the biggest news is the return of the Seattle Bladerunners after a one year respite due to injuries. Although NACBAIT Top 25’er Song Cun probably won’t be back to run the show, Austin Yuen (Seattle Pacific U) and Royce Yuen form a more than capable backcourt. Up front, 6-7 Kyle Kiang and 6-4 Jim Shih, both NACBAIT Top 25 selections, will provide the muscle. 6-10 Mike Kan will get a chance to show us how much he has improved his game since 2k6. And with Carter Chinn and Robin Young there to provide underrated support, Seattle should be a contender once again. They aren’t coming in with huge expectations, and they think rust may be a problem, but once they get going, Seattle is going to be a formidable force. That’s the preview. Now let the games begin!
